The hardware order in January 2004 was for 8 multipurpose machines (bart, bayle, browne, coronelli, isidore, moreri, vincent, zwinger) and 1 database server (suda). Placement of the order was announced with this mailing list post. The total cost was US$19,308 plus tax and shipping and created a complete new hardware set as part of the switch from a west coast to an east coast colocation facility. Primary objectives were increased tolerance for failures, followed by improved site performance. Funds were provided by charitable donations. Thanks to all who donated! The switch to the new equipment at the new location was complete by 13 February 2004.
Wikimedia server arrangement as of 2004-02-19, using the machines from this order
That is it, all else fails - so I added A SCSI controller, I am not silly, I can create a Disk - hooray, but can I add it - no! The usual services run as the usual local and network system; It is a domain controller and has exchange 2007 running; The Computer is part of the 'administrators' built in group, but not a Domain Admin (yet).
This is their configuration as shipped. See the Wikimedia servers article for the current configurations. One early planned change moved 1GB from isidore, moreri, vincent and zwinger so that the two Squid machines, browne and coronelli, would have 4GB for caching.
On 7 October 2004 the 2GB of RAM in bart was moved to browne. 4GB of newly purchased Kingston (?) RAM costing US$202 per GB was added to bart.
Multipurpose machines[edit]
This part of the order contained 8 of Silicon MechanicsSM-1151SATA machines, each a P4 2.6, 2x1GB RAM, 80GB SATA RD, Redhat 9 preload,1.44Mb floppy, rail kits. Motherboards are Supermicro P4SCE Rev 2.01 [1] (specification).
Starting in February 2004 these machines provided the web server, Squid cache server, NFS storage and mailing list processing for the Wikimedia Foundation's wiki projects. They made a massive difference to site performance, placing it in the top 25% of web sites in response times according to Alexa, with response times reported by Alexa as 0.9s. The Squid machines handled most of that load, generally serving 60-70% of all hits.

Database server[edit]
This part of the order contained Silicon MechanicsSM-2280S, Dual AMD Opteron 246, 4GB memory, SCSI RAID 5, 3x36 (Seagate ST336607LC), logical capacity 72GB, redundant power supply, RH9 preload, 1.44mB floppy, rail kits.
The RAID controller is an MegaRAID SCSI 320-1LP [2] with 64k buffer and battery-backup for it, allowing safe write buffering. Options to use the buffer are described here.
Subsequently three refurbished 146GB Seagate ST3146807LC drives [3] were added, showing 'CSC146GB-10KREFURBISHED' as their drive identifier string. In August 2004 a fourth 146GB drive replaced one of the 36GB drives and the RAID arrays were reconfigured to 4 disk RAID 10 and 2 disk RAID 1.
From February 2004 to July 2004, when it was replaced by Ariel, this machine, named Suda, provided primary database service for all Wikimedia wiki projects, both as the initial machine in the new east coast location and continuing after reliability problems which made geoffrin unusable after it was shipped to and returned from the vendor (not Silicon Mechanics!) to fix the initial problems it had. Geoffrin was eventually returned for a refund.

Division Overflow Error! Critical error 5672
So I'm running spinrite on my Terabyte Western Digital. 512 byte sectors, nothing fancy. It's one part of a mdadm raid array that I took out to fix a bad sector. It runs okay for a while, but then I get this error: A critical error occured at: 5672 from which SpinRite CANNOT recover. The system has been halted. I tried jumping ahead to where the damage is by setting the start to 80%. This causes spinrite to immediately crash with this error. Is this the result of some limit on HDD sizes. 32-bit limitation? Steve While trying the sr6_r01 preview, I had a Division Overflow error. When I started Spinrite, it warned me the drive was not well, it was a red screen but I can't remember the exact words, sorry :-(. I know the disk is on it's last legs but I thought I'd give spinrite a go to see what it could do. I tried this twice, getting the screen grab on the second attempt. Hi Steve, sorry for jumping barefoot into *your* group but I was thinking about an idea which may be interesting Your spinrite already has all the 'tech stuff' in place to handle different HDs/controllers and in any case to work w/o problems; now... in some cases one may need to totally WIPE an HD so... what about creating a 'stripped down' version of SR which instead of performing a 'read/ wipe/rewrite' just performs multiple 'pattern writes' on a disk to totally wipe all its contents ? Spinrite and seek errors
I am a new user to Spinrite. While testing a laptop I get seek errors. Spinrite shows about 220,000 seek errors on a 15 gig partition. Rate shows as 4339 which I believe is 4.339%. The drive shows no bad sectors, and no recovered sectors. ECC error count is 8,313,435. Wayne Hutchinson wrote: > I am a new user to Spinrite. I've no idea what will happen if UDMA or XDMA work with SPINRITE 6, or SPINRITE 6 will have it's own UDMA code? So want to ask you for commen...
If spinrite can't help me, is there another program...

Steve, Why the change in the 'From' field? Matias [for the unabridged version, see Matias's post above] > Why the change in the 'From' field? It's back. Division Overflow Error
Realising you might want more info, I tried it again for the third time, taking screen grabs at each stage but the error did not happen again, typical. I hope the screenshots below are of some us...

Steve, Just so you know it appears that http://spinrite.info/ is down. Simply shows up as a white page displaying 'No web site is configured at this address.' and title of page is 'Site Not Found'. Steve: wipe-only spinrite ?
Hi Steve, sorry for jumping barefoot into *your* group but I was thinking about an idea which may be interesting Your spinrite already has all the 'tech stuff' in place to handle different HDs/controllers and in any case to work w/o problems; now... in some cases one may need to totally WIPE an HD so... what about creating a 'stripped down' version of SR which instead of performing a 'read/ wipe/rewrite' just performs multiple 'pattern writes' on a disk to totally wipe all its contents ? I know, there are tools like http://dban.sourceforge.n...

Hard drive 'error' but Spinrite reads partition without errors.
I have a couple of WD 160GB hard drives which both failed simultaneously. I'll give more detail about that below... but for now let me tell you what Spinrite does with the drive. The BIOS/POST reports a hardware failure with this drive (booting to Windows XP - and this drive does not appear anywhere - e.g. device manager or in Storage Management) Spinrite 'sees' the drive but has 'unknown' against all of the drive properties. It sees the NTFS volume on the drive It runs the level 2 'recovery' perfectly... although nothing is actually found to be fa...
Spinrite and seek errors
I am a new user to Spinrite. While testing a laptop I get seek errors. Spinrite shows about 220,000 seek errors on a 15 gig partition. Rate shows as 4339 which I believe is 4.339%. This computer frequently refuses to boot Windows XP but always boots Ubuntu Linux. Is this an excessive seek error rate and what does seek error mean? The drive shows no bad sectors, and no recovered sectors. ECC error count is 8,313,435. Wayne Hutchinson wrote: > I am a new user to Spinrite. When I was running SpinRite 6.0, I got a screen that said my system was halted because of a Division Overflow Error. That screen gave a lot of data regarding the CPU registers, etc. Where do I report this? Do I report it here, or is there an email address where I should report it? SpinRite question for Steve
I don't now own SR 5 (all my disks are NTFS), but I'm thinking about buying it now so I can continue to work with the pre-release SR 6. Division Overflow Error
Hi there, I wonder if anyone can help with this error message from Spinrite6 on a Seagate please (model ST360020A, 60Gb). After a minute or so of running at either the deepest level or Level 1, Spinrite gives up with this: 'Division Overflow Error! 'A critical error occurred at B022 from which Spinrite CANNOT recover.
